Sugar ‘n Spice Gingerbread

  • 1/3 C shortening
  • ½ C Pioneer® Sugar
  • 1 egg
  • ¾ C water
  • ½ C molasses
  • 1 ½ C all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • whipped cream or topping


  1. Preheat oven to 350° F. Grease and flour an 8-inch square pan (or use a cooking spray); set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, cream shortening and Pioneer® Sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. In a medium bowl, beat the egg and combine with water and molasses.
  4. In another medium bowl, combine flour, ginger, baking soda and salt. Add to the creamed mixture alternately with molasses mixture, beating well after each addition to mix thoroughly. Pour into prepared baking pan.
  5. Bake for 28-32 minutes or until a toothpick or knife inserted near the center comes out clean. Serve warm with whipped cream, whipped topping or vanilla ice cream.

Cooks Note

Sprinkle a little shaved chocolate, ground cinnamon or nutmeg on top before serving. Enjoy!
