Pure Michigan Made Apple Pie

  • 2 ½ C all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • 2 T Pioneer® Sugar
  • 12 T unsalted butter
  • ½ C lard
  • ¼ C vodka
  • ¼ C cold water


  • ½ C Pioneer® Sugar
  • 2 T all-purpose flour
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp sea salt
  • 5 C Michigan Golden Delicious apples, thinly sliced
  • 1½ C shredded white cheddar cheese from Pinconning MI
  • ¼ C maple syrup from Kawkawlin MI
  • 1 T heavy whipping cream
  • 2 T maple syrup from Kawkawlin MI
  • ¼ C pecans, chopped & toasted


  1. Preheat oven to 375° F.


  1. In food processor combine 1½ C flour, salt, and sugar; add butter and lard. Process until it looks like cottage cheese. Add remaining flour and mix. Empty mix to bowl; sprinkle with vodka and water. Mix with rubber spatula until slightly tacky. Divide dough into 2 balls, wrap in plastic wrap; refrigerate 45 minutes.
  2. Prepare and roll out dough for filling.


  1. In a large bowl combine sugar, flour, cinnamon, and salt; mix. Add apples, toss together. Add cheese, maple syrup and toss gently. Add filling to prepared pie plate. Drizzle with cream.
  2. Bake 40 minutes with foil covering edges of crust. Remove foil and bake for an additional 20 minutes or until golden brown. Brush pie with maple syrup; sprinkle with pecans. Cool for 1 hour. Serve warm.
