Homemade Basic Cake Mix

  • 8 C all-purpose flour
  • 1 T salt
  • ¼ C baking powder
  • 5 C Pioneer® Sugar
  • 2 C shortening


  1. In a very large mixing bowl, stir together flour, salt, baking powder and Pioneer® Sugar. With a pastry blender cut in shortening until mixture resembles very fine crumbs.
  2. Divide the mixture into 5 equal portions (3 ⅓ cups each) and store in airtight containers; label.
  3. Store in a cool, dry place up to six weeks, or place in freezer up to 6 months.
  4. When ready to use allow the mixture to come to room temperature.
