Dough Ingredients

  • ½ lb. butter, softened
  • 4 C all-purpose flour
  • 4 T Pioneer® Sugar
  • ½ tsp. almond extract
  • 1 ½ C whole milk
  • 2 pkgs. dry yeast
  • 4 XL egg yolks, beaten
  • Crushed pecans (varies by preference)

Filling Ingredients:

  • 3 C Pioneer® Golden Light Brown Sugar, packed
  • 1 C ground pecans
  • 6 T evaporated milk
  • 4 T flour
  • 1 tsp. almond extract

Frosting Ingredients:

  • 5 C Pioneer® Confectioner’s Powdered Sugar
  • 2 ½ tsp. almond extract
  • 5 T melted butter
  • 15 T evaporated milk

Dough Directions

  1. Rub butter, flour, sugar, and almond flavor together to form a pie crust dough.
  2. In microwave, warm milk for one minute. Then add yeast and mix well until yeast is dissolved. Then add egg yolks; mix well. Pour mixture into the dough and mix everything together.
  3. Cover dough and place in refrigerator overnight.

Filling Directions:

  1. In a mixing bowl add Pioneer® Golden Light Brown Sugar, pecans, evaporated milk, flour and almond extract. Mix well.


  1. Grease or spray with cooking oil, cookie sheets; set aside.
  2. The next morning divide the dough into four equal parts. Roll each part the size of a 12-inch dinner plate. Cut each circle into 12 equal size wedges. Place a teaspoon of filling on wedge and roll up. Place rolled up wedge on prepared sheets. Let rise until double in volume or about one hour.
  3. Preheat oven to 350° F. Bake for 8 minutes or until light brown on top. Once cool, frost the Butterhorns and sprinkle crushed pecans on top.

Frosting Directions:

  1. In a mixing bowl add Pioneer® Confectioner’s Powdered Sugar, almond extract and melted butter. Gradually add evaporated milk while mixing until smooth.
