  • 2 C all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2/3 C lard or shortening
  • 6 T cold water

Filling Ingredients:

  • 3 C elderberries
  • 1 ½ C Pioneer® Sugar
  • 4 tsp cornstarch
  • 1 ½ tsp lemon juice


  1. In a large bowl, add flour and salt together; stir. Cut in lard with fork or pastry blender. Add cold water and mix to form dough. Divide dough in half, wrap each section in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 20 minutes.
  2. Preheat oven to 375° F.
  3. In a mixing bowl add elderberries, cornstarch and Pioneer® Sugar; stir to coat berries.
  4. Remove and roll out 1 pie crust. Fit to 8-inch pie plate and trim. Add berry mixture. Sprinkle with lemon juice.
  5. Roll out top pie crust. Drape over pie filling and seal crusts together. Cut a few slits on top for ventilation. Dab with milk and sprinkle with sugar for a glistening effect.
  6. Bake 10 minutes. Reduce oven heat to 325° F and continue baking for approximately 35 more minutes or until done.
