  • 6 Michigan Northern Spy or Honey Crisp apples
  • 2 pears
  • ¾ C Pioneer® Sugar
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 5 T butter

Crust Ingredients:

  • 2 C flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 4 T butter
  • ½ C lard
  • 1 to 4 T vodka

Praline Topping:

  • ½ C butter
  • 2 T milk
  • ¾ C walnuts, chopped
  • ½ C Pioneer® Golden Light Brown Sugar

    1. Preheat oven to 400° F.

Pie Filling:

  1. Peel and slice apples and pears. Mix sugar and spices and pour over apples/pears. Add lemon juice and let ingredients rest while preparing pie crust.

  1. Place flour, salt, butter (cubed) and lard in a large mixing bowl. Incorporate ingredients to form dough the size of peas, then add vodka. Mix until dough forms a ball (DON’T OVER WORK YOUR DOUGH.) Form dough into two round disks and refrigerate until ready to use.
  2. Place disk between 2 pieces of wax paper coating dough with flour; roll out dough turning ¼ turn after each roll; repeat for top crust.

Praline Topping:

  1. Mix butter, milk, walnuts and sugar together; set aside.

  1. Place bottom crust in pie plate and fill with prepared apple filling, mounded slightly and topped with butter cubes. Water the edges of bottom crust and place top crust over apple filling. Cut slits in dough to vent pie and gently place top crust on filling to cover; crimp, press, and seal the edges.
  2. Bake for 45 minutes. Remove from oven, pour the praline mix over top crust and bake for an additional 7 minutes.
